Photo Analyses

This is the image I would like to use for my front cover, I have edited it so that it's brighter and sharper.

Having it be a portrait shot with lots of negative space will allow me to add a large masthead and many coverlines. Also, as the model is off-center, the left third can be taken up by secondary images and coverlines to have maximum appeal.

The complimentary colours of blue and orange make the photo bold, relating to the genre of rock music, although I wanted to maintain the conventional palette of red, white and black.

Having a female model will appeal more to my TA as they can relate to her, and I intended to stay away from using sex appeal, as female musicians are often presented as sexual objects in the media, which is unfair and unappealing to a female audience. The direct address however is appealing as it engages the reader - without intimidation - through eye contact. I will reinforce this with certain words on the front cover when constructing my magazine.

Finally, although the posture may look comical, it is bold and strong, supported by the bright colours. The fierce expression also makes it clear that the music genre is rock as opposed to pop.

I'd like to use this image on the DPS, taking up the other half with a plain black page, as it will look as though the photo fades to black.

Again, having lots of negative space is beneficial as I can present a large title - a pullout quote - at the top and smaller article text without obscuring the image.

I also believe this image is a good chioce because it holds a lot of black, and a little bit of red (the lipstick and skateboard wheel.) I can support these colours with the text I use, and rely on the dark background to use white text as well. This will result in the conventional colour palette surrounding rock music.

Furthermore, the model's expression being blank will encourage the audience to read the text, as the image is giving little information away. As well as this, the skateboard symbolises youth and fun so will appeal to my young audience, whilst presenting rock music as free-spirited and fast-paced instead of violent.

Here is the photo I intend to use on the contents page. It is very similar to the front cover but showing another model will allow me present a wider ange of sub-genres, reaching a wider audience in turn. Moreover, it emphasises that my TA is females, and is therefore more appealing than just one model.

The image will sit at the top of the page, making it top-heavy, I will add text on top of the photo to create a layered look, conventional in rock musicmagazines aimed at young people.

Below are some photos I would like to use as secondary images in my production, some I have edited to be monochrome which will feature on the double page spread. Others I will reduce in size or crop, and use on the front cover and contents page with anchorage.
