I have been creating my front cover and contents page using Microsoft Publisher.

Here is my first plan of my front cover. The first changes I made were to the secondary image; I reduced its size and rounded its shape for it to have a softer appearance in order to appeal to children more. I then added the strapline which I intend to use in anchorage to an image which I will add in my next draft. Finally, I added "Winter 2014" and some holly in the corner to give a festive feel, making this magazine issue look exclusive and relevant to the current season. This works as a substitute to my plan's festive coverline, which I will no longer include so that the front cover isn't overcrowded.
Because of my research, I have set the Title in Comic Sans MS and used this font for the coverline aimed at children as it is appropriate for them rather than adults. However I have also used Book Antiqua in order to appeal specific text at adults. This is because I found that sans-serif is more appealing to children, whereas serif fonts are more effective on adults.
To improve, I will add at least one more coverline, add a photo that is relevant to the strapline and alter the masthead so that it is less bulky and therefore looks more professional.

Here's another draft with the following changes;
-
I have made the masthead fade at the edges so that it is softer, making it look more professional.
-
I have added another coverline with a small icon relating to it.
-
In order to fill empty space and provide more information, I have included a puff which I will change to suit the page more in the future.
-
I have also adapted the bottom of the front page: having looked at other (real) school magazines, I tilted the secondary image, gave it a border and reduced the anchorage. I then made the "PLUS" overlap the image to give a less formal, and basic layout.
-
Finally, I have begun to make certain words stand out, "confidence" is now in a different colour to the rest of the words in that coverline, and I will repeat this for my other coverline.
My final piece can be seen in my evaluation.

This is the first draft of my contents page. It follows my original plans very closely and appeals to children as it's so basic.
However, even though I've maintained consistant house colours, it does not look professional and my front cover is certainly the stronger of the two. In order to bring the contents page to a similar standard, I will manipulate the images so that they fit the page more comfortably, I will change the text in ways so that key words stand out like I have done on the front cover. And finally, I will attempt to make the tree less bulky and simple, but maintain the appeal to children.

This is my final contents page design. I have made the above changes, and feel that it looks improved. I have also added in the same holly motif as is on the front cover, in order to maintain the seasonal house style.
